Mars Projects

April 1st, 2009  Tagged , ,

The children have done a fantastic job this term on our “Mission to Mars” projects. Based around an idea for a suite of lessons developed by NASA, we have looked at our community, decided what is important to us and found out what life would be like on Mars. The children have also planned and built their own Mars bases, which have taken into account the atmospheric and weather conditions on Mars. In the final part of the project the children have created these PowerPoint presentations to share their projects with you. I gave the children about 5 minutes in front of the interactive whiteboard showing them very briefly what PowerPoint could do, and then the rest was up to them. I was surprised at how readily they took to PowerPoint, but it just shows how children’s ICT skills are progressing at a startling rate. The children have worked very independently on the presentations and the project in general.

WARNING: Some of these files are rather large, despite being compressed! Fern, Harriet, Martha and Isabella’s project is over 10MB, and Toby, Jack and Harry’s is over 8MB. This shouldn’t be a problem on a broadband connection, but if you’re on dial-up please be prepared for the file to take a while to download. The rest of the projects are 3MB or less.

Animal Music

Class 3 have been making a marvellous music all about animals. We used different types of instruments to make music that sounded like owls and snails. It was exciting and fun. We recorded the pieces using VoiceThread so that we could share them with you.

Read All About It!

This week in English we are looking at newspaper reports. The children have looked at what types of information you can find in newspapers. Today we looked at photographs and headlines, exploring the job that the headlines does. The children then wrote their own headlines to go with a range of photographs. This was a good opportunity to practise using the text comment feature of VoiceThread:

(N.B. I did tell them not to worry too much about their spelling!)

VoiceThread

I thought that some of you might like to see an example of VoiceThread, to give you some idea of how it has been used. Here we have a photograph of our class mascot, and we have added text and recorded comments to it. This was just a go at using the software, so the comments aren’t groundbreaking or profound, but it does show how the children can all interact and comment on a photograph or video. If you have a look on the VoiceThread site there are some interesting uses of this by teachers. I particularly like the class book reviews. I think that this could have a use as a podcasting tool, so we’ll be looking into that next.
