Spelling Resources

December 5th, 2008

Spelling is the final step to becoming a complete writer. Children need to learn to read, create sentences and write before they become confident spellers. The children learn the different spelling patterns, following the advice in the national “Letters and Sounds” document. The year 2 children are working in parallel with the year 2 children in Mrs Brown’s class. The year 3 children have been working on some of the tricky spelling patterns, such as the different spelling patterns for the /a/, /ee/ and /i/ sounds. I will be trying a slightly different spelling check system after Christmas for my more confident spellers.

Here are some online resources which will be useful if you want to work on spelling with your child at home.

Spelling Strategies
Posters of common spelling strategies (i after e etc) from Sparklebox.

Spelling Patterns
A poster of spelling patterns from Sparklebox, similar to the one we have on the wall in the classroom.

Be the Teacher
A worksheet from Primary Resources where children need to spot the misspelled words and correct them.
